Under the auspices of the Croatian Ministry of Transport, several organisations, including CRUP, the Croatian inland navigation development centre, have come together to sign an agreement to co-operate and promote intermodal transportation in Croatia. Signatories to the agreement include representatives from the intermodal, road, and rail, maritime and inland navigation.
Mario Baby, Croatian State Secretary for the Sea, welcomed the agreement, stating that optimising intermodal transport would enable better utilization of Croatian transport routes and enhance cooperation between the different transport sectors. He stressed that this was also important as the European Union is placing increasing importance on moving traffic from roads to more environmentally friendly forms of transport and that Croatia is still lagging behind in this trend.
The next step after the signing of the agreement will be to form clusters of intermodal transport and organise promotion, development and computerisation projects.

21.5.2010Barge transport for railway station
Network Rail has announced that it will take more than 2,000 lorry journeys off central London streets over the next two years by using Thames barges to deliver and remove materials from the Blackfriars station site. During the Blackfriars project Network Rail will deliver more than 14,000 tonnes of materials to build the station's new bridge deck, longer platforms and roof spanning the river. At the same time more than 8,000 tonnes of material from deck and pier demolition will also be removed. Barges arrive at Blackfriars on a daily basis. [more]

Materials destined for Blackfriars will be loaded onto barges at Thames Warf near Blackwall. Each barge takes approximately 75 minutes to reach the site where the new steel work is lifted by crawler crane onto the bridge deck.
"The landmark Blackfriars station will be the first in the capital to span the Thames, providing a direct link to the cultural centres on the south bank for the first time," says Jim Crawford, programme director of the Thameslink project. "Working directly above the Thames, delivering and removing materials by barge, makes a lot of sense to us both practically and environmentally. We are committed to using this method."
Port of London Authority chief executive Richard Everitt said: "Water and rail are well regarded as the most environmentally-friendly forms of transport, so bringing them together is a winning combination.

20.5.20102010 TEN-T calls launched
The European Commission has launched three new 2010 TEN-T Calls for Proposals, making an additional EUR 172 million of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) budget available to finance European transport infrastructure projects. Funding opportunities are to be found under the TEN-T Annual Programme and Multi-Annual Programme. [more]
The European Commission has launched three new 2010 TEN-T Calls for Proposals, making an additional EUR 172 million of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) budget available to finance European transport infrastructure projects. Funding opportunities are to be found under the TEN-T Annual Programme and Multi-Annual Programme.
The Trans-European Transport Network Executive Agency (TEN-T EA), which manages the technical and financial implementation of the TEN-T programme, is responsible on behalf of its "parent" Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport, for the management of the calls for proposals and for the external evaluation of project proposals submitted.
Commission Vice President Siim Kallas, responsible for transport, said: "The TEN-T is making available an additional EUR 172 million of the TEN-T budget to fund key projects of European added value. These include projects in the fields of Motorways of the Sea and River Information Services under the Multi-Annual Programme. In addition, the Annual Programme has been fine-tuned in 2010 to allow us to prepare for future transport priorities, notably making transport greener, and to increase the participation of private partners in transport infrastructure projects."
The deadline for the submission of proposals is 31 August 2010. Proposals will be evaluated on the basis of their relevance to TEN-T priorities and policy objectives, their maturity, their impact – particularly socio-economic and environmental – and their quality in terms of completeness, clarity, soundness and coherence.

10.5.2010Sharing made easy
In the current economic climate, businesses face change and challenges on a daily basis. In the current economic climate, businesses face change and challenges on a daily basis. Dealing with a rapidly expanding marketplace (globalisation), and increasing competition, diversity among consumers, and availability to new forms of technology requires creativity and innovation. But, when strategizing during strategic planning, and when designing new products and services, how can one know what innovations are already there? The answer has been provided for inland waterways through an innovative solution – a digital information source called, imaginatively, the Innovation Database – www.naiades.info/innovations.
Financed by the European Commission and implemented within the framework of the PLATINA project, the Innovation Database for Inland Waterway Transport aims to encourage sharing of innovation throughout Europe. Information on innovative projects is easily accessible with just a few mouse clicks. The database will bring innovation owners and innovation users closer together and consequently speed up developments in inland navigation.
By implementing innovation, inland navigation can continue to improve its usability and customer satisfaction focus, making sure it is seen as a preferred partner in intermodal transport. However, in order to continue this strategy, an optimal transfer of know how into practice is required. This is why the Innovation Database has been created.
The online database is based on a Wiki-approach and enables users to easily look for existing innovations and to insert their own entries with minimal effort. Currently the database is already populated with some selected innovations and it will be enlarged gradually in the course of time. All entries follow the same structure and are arranged according to functional groups. They comprise both research projects and practical examples from industry. Presently there are innovations for, amongst others, ship design in general, hull structure, equipment for cargo and crew, machinery and ship systems and on improvements in economic, environmental and logistics performances, respectively. Comments and contributions are welcome and can be entered online or over the contacts below.
